THREE THINGS THAT DISTRIBUTORS MUST DO WELL - PART 3: TRAINING During the break between my freshman and sophomore year of college I started in my universities engineering coop program. I was extremely fortunate to land a position in a General Motors stamping plant about thirty-five miles south of my home. The proximity of the plant allowed me to save money by living at home rather than renting an apartment. The proximity also allowed me the opportunity to resume some activities that I had to put aside when I left for the university. One of those activities was to renew my participation with the Boy Scouts of America. I rejoined my former troop as a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. You see, I am an Eagle Scout, and this organization has always held a soft spot for me and one that I was passionate to give back to. During this time the troop had two brothers enrolled who were separated in age by only a year. Shortly after the younger brother turned 16, their father purchased them a nice used car with the provision that it was “theirs” as long as they could continue to demonstrate to him that they were responsible stewards of this machine. These brothers, beaming with pride at the trust bestowed them by their father, arrived at the next scout meeting gleefully showing off their new ride. I would soon, however, hear a story that has CONTRIBUTOR ARTICLE remained with me to this day. To show their father what responsible car owners they were, when the car came due for its first oil change, they decided to do it themselves. They drove to the store, bought oil and a filter. They came home, found the drain plug and drained the oil, replaced the filter, and emptied the bottles of new oil into the engine. Proud of their accomplishment they got into the car and headed off to a friend’s house. They were only a short distance down the road when the car started making funny noises. It didn’t take long for these noises to escalate until the car emitted one last explosive” boom “, shuddered, and died. They had done everything they had been told, their oil change was “text book”, so what had gone wrong? As their dad would later discover while debriefing them, they had raised the hood and searched for a place to fill the oil. Finding a cap, they twisted it off and poured the oil in. Unfortunately what they had believed to be the opening to the crankcase was, in fact, the opening to the radiator. This happened in an age before smart phones and the internet. Today this mistake is unlikely to happen because it is so easy to simply go on YouTube and watch in living color as someone performs the task you wish to replicate. CONTINUED ON PAGE 106
