34 THE DISTRIBUTOR’S LINK Robert Footlik Robert B. Footlik, PE is a retired Professional Industrial Engineer. With over 50 years’ experience as a Warehouse and Logistics Consultant to a wide variety of clients including Fastener Distributors, Bob has a wealth of valuable information for our industry and he is willing to share it. While Footlik & Associates is now closed, his expertise is still available to his friends and our readers. For friendly advice, a second opinion or just to start a conversation, he can be reached at robert@footlik.net. THE “5-STAR” WAREHOUSE UNPACKED - IT’S BEEN AN INTERESTING 2 YEARS - SEASON 2, EPISODE 4 The “5-Star Warehouse” series in The Distributor’s Link Magazine began 2 years ago with an anonymous Fastener Distributor taking a tour of an industry trendsetting warehouse. It was inspired by a made for cable TV saga, “The Bear.” The plot hinges on a restauranteur’s quest to reshape an Italian beef stand into a Michelin starred bistro. There are many parallels with an average Fastener Distributor updating a tired, lackadaisical operation with the help of a team of unlikely mentors and an infusion of cash. In many respects this is a “Pygmalion,” “My Fair Lady” scenario. Touring With Your Eyes Wide Open Our narrator and a team of his key personnel visit the “5-Star Fastener Distribution” warehouse and discover a new world with an operation that takes cleanliness, order and efficiency to a considerably higher level. The tour provides a vision and a desire, but it all seems out of reach and out of touch with reality. Everything, at every turn looks somewhat like our unnamed Distributor’s operation, but different, more interesting, exciting, and aesthetic. Yet the visitors are skeptical about what they see. In Season 1, Episode 2 the tour continues with surprises everywhere. Each turn of the tour provided a glimpse of a super neat, highly efficient operation and the role of the staff adds “food for thought” about just what makes this operation work. It is the people. They are not “staff,” or “employees,” they are “Bosses” who take charge and responsibility for all the activities to make this a “5-Star Warehouse.” Mike, the tour conductor provides some of the CONTRIBUTOR ARTICLE background of how the operation and facility evolved on an accelerated basis. A new generation, with a new vision, was given free rein to reshape the company into her own image and she did this by gaining everyone’s attention and loyalty. People who like coming to work and building something great can become motivated simply by their psychological investment. Caring for both the “Boss” and his or her family, teambuilding extracurricular activities and a positive attitude can generate exponential improvements. That is what kicked off the entire process for the Management Team. Episode 3 takes us through the physical operation with stops at some innovative and exciting workstations. Everything happens according to plan, on schedule and without drama. At first, the visitors are unsure that there is anything going on. What they are observing is perfection in action. There is little drama because everything is performed only once and to perfection. This is not just a slogan; it is a way of life. No apologies are required, no rework is acceptable and perfection as defined through the customer’s experience is the ultimate goal. The Proposal At lunch, after dining on a gourmet meal, “Operations Boss Mike” relates how “5-Star” management identified an industry niche that they wanted to pursue; specified fasteners for aerospace, marine and critical applications. A field trip to the Experimental Aircraft Association annual convention really opened their eyes to the potential of an opportunity that they were unprepared to fulfill, but this is exactly what our narrator’s company does every day. THE DISTRIBUTOR’S LINK 35 NEW PRODUCT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Spin-Guard Introduces New Concept Security Fastener That Converts Standard Hex Bolts Into Tamper-Resistant Security Bolts Spin-Guard LLC (Minneapolis, MN) has introduced a product that fastener distributors haven’t seen before: a patent-pending retrofit security system that converts standard hex bolts into tamperresistant security fasteners. The concept is straightforward. A freespinning stainless steel cover slips over an existing hex-head bolt. A precision bushing carries the bolt load independently, leaving the outer cover free to rotate. Grab it with locking pliers, a pipe wrench, or a universal extraction socket — it just spins. Nothing engages. Nothing moves. “Many security fasteners rely on specialty recesses or pin-drive systems that can eventually be defeated using universal extraction sockets,” said co-founder Rolf Scholtz. “Spin-Guard protects the hex bolt itself behind a freely rotating shield.” The distributor advantage is straightforward: One Spin-Guard SKU per bolt diameter covers every length, thread type, and finish “One SKU per diameter covers every bolt length, thread type and finish” within that diameter, dramatically reducing inventory complexity. For distributors serving municipalities, utilities, parks departments, corrections facilities, schools, and solar installations, Spin-Guard gives sales reps a compelling new reason to revisit existing accounts — offering a retrofit solution to exposed hex bolts already installed in the field. Spin-Guard also fills a gap in the market: torque capacity and larger size bolts. Because the bushing carries load independently of the spinner, the system supports higher torque specifications than most security screws — making it viable for larger fasteners where security options are scarce. All components are manufactured from 303/304 stainless steel and carry a lifetime warranty against corrosion and workmanship defects. Available in 1/4” through 12mm, with additional sizes in development. Distributor sample kits available. Media Contact: spin-guard.com info@spin-guard.com | 612-295-1011
